you know what?

Yesterday, I was thinking.
This is a strange season for us. We're trying to do many things at once.
Fundraise to plant a church, visit with family, learn as much as we can.
We're also trying all the normal stuff: raising our kids, becoming better mothers & fathers (by the grace of God) and the same for being married.

It's not that we're so super ambitious.
We've just received a call that we can't deny, that is growing more overwhelming by the day.
But as the call to move to Boston sounds louder in our hearts, the everyday calls - they don't get quieter. Not a bit. Maybe louder. Daily, my heart yearns to be a better wife and mother so that Nick has the freedom to be a better church planter. Daily, I want to be a better friend - so I can love my future (and past) friends well. All the calls, they just get louder and the time - it just gets shorter.

So, blogging where does it fall in that? Is it a call? A worthy pursuit?
Food blogging, that feels fun right now. This fun challenge, place of accountability, little hobbyish sort of thing that I love to write about and read about in stolen moments. But what about this little corner of the internets? I started thinking... I love blogs and I love reading blogs and I don't even think that I'd like to read mine. It doesn't have any of the qualities of blogs I like to read. I talked to Nick and he immediately understand, and encouraged me to write about those things, to make it interesting.

And shouldn't it be? If it's going to distract from these other worthy pursuits?
If I'm going to have to be intentional to do it at night or at naptime or at 5am?
Shouldn't I want to read it, or ppppssssh... you want to read it?
So - you know what, I'm thinking on that.
What would make this blog worth writing, or moreover - worth reading.

And listen, I'd like to hear your thoughts too, friend.
Make a cup of coffee (or tea, Lauren) and write a comment.
What blogs do you get excited to read and why?
What do you get excited to write and why?
What takes something like this from a distraction of worthy pursuits to the place of supplementing those pursuits as they already exist?

*** One issue that has been predetermined are there are far too few pictures. Really, good interesting pictures. Here is my first step in remedying that problem. Good day. ***

one of my beautiful little worthy pursuits.

I'm coming out of the closet! I've been secretly reading your blog for about a year and I don't even know how I stumbled across it. It seems you know some folks that I went to UNC with? Anyway, I've loved your blog because it's honest and real. You can't make this stuff up :)

Take that for what it's worth...this blog-reader hasn't gotten bored!

I love reading your blog, as is! I love stories about your marriage and ministry (my husband and I are both in ministry, too) and moving and kids. Pictures are always great! I agree with the previous comment, your honesty and sincerity are refreshing!

I love this blog. Love everything about it - it's a great mix of mommyhood, kids, fashion, wish lists, food and life updates. Plus when you write about what you're learning I am inspired.

The blogs I love to read now are mostly mommy blogs - since I am soon to be one. I like them because it feels like a virtual community of women trying to make it work, while not losing themselves in their new role in life. I also love fashion blogs because as I get older I tend to drift to the same old clothes and need inspiration.

Love you, love this blog. But yes, more pictures please!

They took my words! (just sayin:)

I, too, love your blog because of it's authenticity!! You are a jewel telling your story- as-is w/ no added fluff.. And a good story you're telling! Noble characters with worthy goals overcoming obstacles to reach them! It doesn't get much better than that! (I follow donmilleris.com and love his concept of life-as-story..) When people (like you) tell good stories with their lives, it inspires those around you and challenges us to do the same!

Whatever you do, keep reflecting/writing from your heart!! :)

From the first time Angela said "My new friends Nick and Jessi are so great" I was hooked. Your choice to follow the Lord's call and the journey it as taken us all on, is wonderful. Thank you for letting us follow.

I love your blog as is also! They are nice and short entries (as I don't always have time to read long deep ones) I echo the first part of what Kara said.

Agreed. I love keeping up with one of my favorite families and being inspired by your continued journey since we aren't in the same state anymore. I love that my Momma (above) now follows you and my friends follow and connect with you. I LOVE that Rissa has connected with you all and that more bloggyness has come from it.

So I don't think you need to seek out any theme or particulars...write from the heart, share the ups and downs, keep the amazing pics coming, and just know that you are nurturing a community of readers that are reflecting on their own stories to tell!

love you friend.

this is soooo emo and ambiguous, please just take it at a zoom-out perspective. just thoughts.

maybe a blog is an attempt to institutionalize one's "self," a pursuit to represent all facets of one's complex person, but like donald miller said in blue like jazz, God doesn't resolve. maybe we don't either. we don't always come to a conclusive point with each circumstance we go through. sometimes, we just obey. sometimes, it's just that boring, spare the intimacy with him, that can't be contained or explained in a blog entry.

maybe the things you do, day in and out, jessi, are so important that the blog is fading. the documentation of indescribable moments is ceasing to flow because you are so busy making those moments (that is a compliment).

but maybe you should keep blogging about parsnips, busted lamps, and cute little girls named glory because a writer always attempts to explain these ambiguous, mysterious, worship-filled and human-filled moments. maybe i just made my point. or maybe i changed the point altogether. again, just thoughts. i certainly don't resolve.........hahaha!

hi!

i just came across your blog a few weeks ago and have been checking in every few days. so first, i want to tell you, that you are definitely writing things that people want to read. your love and desire to serve christ stands out in your writing and your pursuit to the best mother and wife you can be, as well. that being said :)... some other blogs i love to read have

a) lots of pictures
b) do-it-yourself ideas
c) honest posts that make me think or pray

i love to write tid-bits about my kiddos because when i look back and read them (and i have been only blogging since december) i smile to myself that i am so happy i wrote that down or else i would never remember all those little quirky things i loved about them at that moment in time.

i also just like to write about how i truly feeling, no masking anything. my struggles and failures along with my accomplishments and brighter than bright days.

keep it up, girl :)

mmm... tea!

right so, i just like your blog. i like (as others have said) that it's authentic and honest. not too long. i love that i feel that i get to know you and your family and heart better through reading it. i love that i read it before i really knew you and so already knew i would love you by the first time we talked. please don't start posting amazing kid craft/art ideas. i read enough of those and i just can't take it anymore ;)
i look forward to you documenting (as you said in a previous post) the life and heart of a church planter's wife. honestly, there are a lot of good mommy blogs out there. i love yours because i love you, but i think as you process what you're going through that is so unique, it will give you some added community and support and outlet. plus, so many people in boston will read it that you'll have a built-in friend base the second you move up there (or something like that)

I read your blog because of the authenticity of it. I also can relate to the church planting path and I find comfort, wisdom, and inspiration in reading your journey. Just the day to day stuff relates. I do love pics too! :)
