let's get to the heart of it

 photo Slide1_zps9f0e8780.jpg

For me, March feels like a good time to circle the wagons and get back to the heart of what's at hand. If you're a goal-setter or a plan-maker, you probably spent January and February taking steps forward and making things happen. Maybe some went well, maybe you feel like you're back to square one on other things. I have areas where I set goals and saw great fruit, and I feel like I had some plans or ideas that have needed restructuring or more heart-work.

When we set out to make our Naptime Diaries Shop plans for the year, we set March as a catch up month. We obviously will still sell prints and run our shop, but we're not releasing anything new and we don't have any big projects planned. Our major goals? Clean + reorganize the office spaces (more on that next week), stabilize our rhythms as a business, freshen up our websites, and get back to the heart of why we do what we do.

Scripture is crazy important to us. Knowing that people are reading, absorbing, learning, and being blessed by God's Word is the most important thing. It's a blessing to us that we get to do it creatively, in a way that hopefully is incredibly inspiring to people. So this month we're circling the wagons and getting back to doing what we do: working to get scripture in as many homes as possible, in the most creative + inspiring ways possible! And I thought I'd let you guys in on a little bit of that process this month.

First up, we try to start most seasons or print releases with a mood board. For winter 2014, I was feeling crazy uninspired so my great gal Hayley at The Tiny Twig made a moodboard FOR us, which was a huge blessing. As we prep to release a spring/summer line of prints and as I design for the blog and style photos for social media + promotions, I'll try to rely heavily on the following moodboard! It's inspired by summers on the East Coast & West Coast and COLOR. When I made this moodboard I was thinking about picnics on the side of the Atlantic Ocean, afternoons painting with my kids, jeweltones, hiking in the pacific northwest, waking up in a cushy + classic bedroom, or taking naps in an eclectic bohemian bedroom. It might sound disjointed and crazy to you, but to me it all fits!

Clockwise from the top: House of Rym blanket, one of my instagram pictures, Yolanda Sanchez painting, Nena & Co bag, Whitlock & Co pillow, driftwood shelf, sailing picture, pacific northwest,
bedroom inspiration, one of my instagrams of ocean

The next thing I did for this season was really get visual and specific about the homes we design for. I always tell small business owners they should KNOW their customer and bloggers that they should KNOW their reader. Where do they read your blog? What are they typically wearing? When they use your product, where is it in their house? When I worked at Anthropologie, I thought one of the wisest things they did as a company was name the lady they were designing + merchandising for each season. Each collection of clothing had a name, she had a whole story, a personality, a job, and we knew what her family was like. It was all imaginary - but it helped the company be intentional about their customer, their branding, etc.

So I try to do the same and be intentional about who I'm designing for and what she'd like on her walls. While I like the customers that don't fit the mold and still love our product, here are some of the homes + ladies I tend to keep in mind when making our prints. You might recognize a few of these gals!

A. This picture is straight from the home of Erin over at Blue Eyed Bride. Erin is a blogger & a sweet friend of mine. I haven't been to her new house (though I'd sure like to go), but I picture it classically decorated with a youthful flair.

B. Next up, I love this picture of Jessica from Jessica N Designs sitting near her Ephesians 4:2 print. Jessica is a young mom, an entrepreneur like me, and when I see pictures of her home or studio - it looks really eclectic and bright.

C. One of my favorite houses I've ever hung out in is my friend Ellen's. It's a crazy beautiful mix of traditional, creative, bohemian, comfortable, and on trend. It's the kind of house where you feel like you can put your shoes on the couch and talk for an hour - but you also look around and think, "I want to go home and do THAT in my house." Ellen was one of my first handmade business friends and I still design with her in mind - would Ellen want this

D. I've followed Promise Tangeman for years online and she is one of the most inspiring + creative ladies I know. When I see glimpses of her house on instagram or her blog, I take note. She seems to be edgy in her home decor, while also really organized and tidy. I definitely think of homes like hers when I design.

E. Lastly, I try to watch women who are most definitely taste-makers like Whitney English. Whitney has impeccable style & is an amazing designer. Her home decor is really classic, but super timeless. I love some edgy, bohemian home style - but I still want our prints to be traditional enough to fit in a home like Whitney's.

But again - the heart of it is the heart of it.
No matter how people's homes look, our desire is to provide inspirational art that reminds people of God's Word and encourages them in their days.

What's on your plate for March? We'd love to hear.
And do you have a space you'd like us to keep in mind when making our prints?
Tell us about it!

Inspiring Projects for Imperfect Women, volume one

Are you like me? Creative, but messy? Intentional but far from meticulous?
This is the first in a series of posts for women that want to do inspiring DIY projects that actually work and help your life. You won't find any hand painted jewelry boxes here that look amazing in the pictures and awful on your nightstand. Hang out with us here as we make intentional and awesome projects with imperfect hands and skills.

Y'all, I hate crafting.
I've got awkward hands and a bad back. Why does crafting seem to hurt your back so bad? All the bending and leaning over something, yeesh.
At the top of my craft-hatred list is scrapbooking. I once had a friend who scrapbooked like it was her j-o-b and I learned quickly by watching her that I just couldn't be a crafter. The stickers, the meticulous cutting and laying out of the pictures, the piles and piles of memories and the sticky paper. I am a messy and creative being, I don't have a meticulous or cautious bone in my body.

Now, that was like seven years ago, and I know that scrapbooking has evolved. I love watching women do the project life stuff and photobooks have taken us so far. It's no longer the preset photo pages with comic sans font captions - we have so many options! There is artifact uprising, even shutterfly & blurb. BUT - It's gotten to a desperate point in our home and we have NO photo books. We have one small one from our wedding, but nothing else. I knew I could order from one of the aforementioned sites, but I found myself at the end of 2013 with an intense desire to get my hands dirty and tell our story.

So that's just what I did.

Step 1. I downloaded the Walgreens app on my phone and praised the Lord that I'm a habitual instagrammer. When you download the Walgreens app on an iPhone, it connects with your instagram and connects all your pictures. You can go through your entire feed and order the ones you want - for .39 a piece. I took about ten minutes while I was feeding Cannon a bottle and selected the hundred or so pictures I loved the most from my 2013 instagram feed. Thirty minutes later, I picked those bad boys up at Walgreens! Woohoo!

Step 2: On the way home from Walgreens, I ran by the craft store and got a cute turquoise leather scrapbook on sale, some blank white paper, and scrapbook pages. I also picked up two rolls of washi tape and some project life small sheets of paper.

Step 3: When my kiddos went to bed that night, I spread out all my 2013 printed instas and lined them up. I arranged them in order of when they were taken and then wrote a short note or memory regarding that day, month, season. I applied all the pictures with washi tape and the same for the notes. It wasn't about perfection or excellence, it was about getting it done. A few hours and several cups of coffee later, I had my first and favorite scrapbook. It was quick and dirty, but it was ours.

I have to say, this little project may have redeemed crafting for me.
I love the idea that my kids can now look over this past year (forever and ever!) and hear my voice and see what my hands made. And for me? The project was SO good for my heart. When I laid out the pictures, I didn't remember headaches or hard days - I was just so stinking grateful for all that the Lord had done. And it inspired me to take more pictures, make more memories, fill this year's book from front to back with pictures and thoughts.

What about you? Are you a crafter? A scrapbooker?
Could you use some more inspiring projects for imperfect women?

fire it up.

A. wild flowers or plants picked near my home B. being at the ocean with my family
C. venti americanos d. watching other women worship God e. paintings of hair
f. running g. white horses h. black watercolor

I have a handful of women that I respect and love and have invited to speak into my actual blog. The idea is that occasionally I can email them and say, "I'm thinking of heading this way …" or "I had an idea for this kind of post…" and allow them to be a sounding board before I go crazy astray with what might not be a good idea. Their wisdom and availability makes me incredibly grateful for them. They make me a better blogger.

I was texting casually with Ashley this weekend about the blog and she was putting into words the exact thoughts that have been rolling around in my head for the past few weeks. She said she loves grace posts, but she'd also like to see more of the kind of fire-you-up-type-of-grace-posts on here. The you've screwed it all up grace is so wonderful and brings freedom, but what about the the grace that inspires and pushes you and speaks life into you.

(end of) summer reading list

Last week, Nick and I sat down and made a goal for each of the four weeks left in our summer. Mine for this past week was that I wanted to read each night. Wellll... I didn't read each night, but the rhythm is slowing coming back into my life.

And I thought I'd share with y'all what I'm reading right now!
1. Morning + Evening: our SheReadsTruth writing team is reading this sweet devotion in addition to our current plan and it does my heart so good. Thank you Spurgeon.
2. Uncovered by Susie Davis. I love everything Susie does. Can't wait to dig into this.
3. The Church Planting Wife by Christine Hoover. Christine sent me a copy and I cried through the first chapter. I'm buying two more copies tomorrow for women I know. Highly recommend.
4. Forgotten God by Francis Chan. I've been reading this since Christmas and it's time to tuck in and finish it. Love every word.
5. Food Rules. This is a reread that I'm excited to dig into as we clean up our diet.

What are you reading? I'd love to hear!
Also, if you need any eBook suggestions...
Be Quiet & Say Something and The Refresh Book are still both for sale!

OUR advent

Welp, y'all
For all of the hullaballu and the selling of the advent calendars, it's almost upon us.
As small business owners who work extra hard during the holidays, it feels crazy important to us that we keep these holy days sacred and special for our family too.
So I've done some strategizing and planning and now I'll stand guard over our days prayerfully and gracefully.

First - a note. A few people have asked me the difference between a 25 day and a 28 day advent. This year, our advent calendar has 28 days so that however you celebrate - you're included. To put it super simply and probably not crazy intelligently, I think a 28 day advent is a little more traditional + liturgical  for the kind of folk who go to a church that does the whole shebang - a different candle each week, 4 full Sundays of advent - thus, 28 days. The 25 day folks tend to go December 1st-25th, following a less liturgical pattern and a little more freeform, ending Christmas day. I was raised in a traditional church but we're in a more evangelical setting now, so we freeform it with 25 days:) I don't think one way is right or wrong! We're all making much of Jesus!

Now. Here are my advent essentials, my absolute goals:
- We want to celebrate with our kids and for them to know this a SPECIAL season.
- We want to set aside time to be telling our kids the beautiful story about our Savior and how He came to earth to rescue us.
- We want to celebrate with our community + family.
- We want to celebrate within our city and neighborhood, being a light for Jesus. We want people to see our joy and point them to Him.
- I want my heart to be right first, I want to be intentionally preparing for Jesus. And this season.

So, some ground rules I'm setting:
- We plan activities but with heaps of GRACE. If something doesn't work, it gets cut.
- We're setting aside Monday + Thursday nights to have intentional bible time with our kiddos. No exceptions. No working during those dinners. No skipping them because we're tired or one of us has a meeting. We're going to try and make them happen each week.
- We will say no to parties and events if we need to. Example: During this first week of Advent coming up, I realized we had an event Sunday night, Tuesday night, Wednesday night, Friday night, and Saturday night. Combine that with the fact that we're small business owners who typically work Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday nights and you have one stressed out family. So even though I really want to go to all those special holiday events, we will say no to some of them.
- I'll be trying really hard to make time to read the SheReadsTruth advent plan each morning myself, to make sure Mama's heart is in the right place. (It starts on our site on Sunday, but it should be available in YouVersion today if you want to follow along)

But without further ado, here's what we'll actually be doing for advent this year!
I'll write activities on the back of our advent calendar and we'll take it down each to reveal with the kids. Some days are big, some days are small, some days are free, some days we've budged for a little!
Anyhow, here it is!

Saturday 1: special breakfast out together
Sunday 2: Frozen yogurt + picking an operation Christmas Child name
Monday 3: Family Scripture night
Tuesday 4: Make Salt Dough Ornaments
Wednesday 5: Chocolate pancakes for breakfast
Thursday 6: Family Scripture night
Friday 7: Go see a matinee movie together!
Saturday 8: Christmas shopping for cousins and Operation Christmas Child
Sunday 9: Make gingerbread houses
Monday 10: Family Scripture night
Tuesday 11: go Ice skating!
Wednesday 12: Family morning trip to Starbucks
Thursday 13: Family Scripture night
Friday 14: Go see a Grinch exhibit
Saturday 15: Take Christmas cookies to neighbors!
Sunday 16: Act out the nativity:)
Monday 17: Family Scripture night
Tuesday 18: visit friends + give our gifts
Wednesday 19: pack for our christmas trip!
Thursday 20: TAKE OUR SPECIAL DRIVE TO SEE FAMILY!
Friday 21: movie night with Nonny
Saturday 22: drive and look at lights
Sunday 23: Fun Christmas Eve service!
Monday 24: Open our first Christmas gift
Tuesday 25: Christmas Day

And that's it. That's how we do Advent.
Lots of Jesus. Lots of fun. A good amount o' sugah. Grace.
and planning, cause I can't help myself.

How about you? What are you doing?
And if you haven't gotten your advent calendar,
I know of a great printable one. :)

Influence at Home.

At first glance, you might think from the title of this post that it will be a super hearty lovey weighty journal entry concerning how I want to be more concerned with my influence in my home than I am online. I like those weighty thoughts, but this isn't that. It's about STUFF.

It's officially two weeks since the Influence Conference
I'm slowly coming out of the fog, back into normal life. The post-conference to do list is getting shorter and shorter and I even spent some time this weekend AWAY from the internet. It was sweet.
And bittersweet.

Cause I miss my people, you know.
And the all day coffee.
Alas - I have little bits of Influence scattered all over my home.
And that makes me smile.

A. Nick took all the crates he built for the market and turned them into a wall of bookshelves in our office. This picture doesn't do it justice. It's HUGE. A whole wall. And it smells like cedar. Win.

B.  My Better Life Bags bag. I cannot get enough of it. Or Rebecca, the designer -
for that matter.

C.  My necklace from The Tiny Twig.

D. My coffee mug from Kacia. It's actually from her home and she left it with me and I drink the coffee outsofit each morning.

E. The chalkboards from the market made it to either side of our bed. Hootie hoo. Now I need some chalk so I can write lovey messages to Nick.

F. Beautiful Suzie Studios necklace.  Love, love, love it.

G. NSPottery ring. It's orange. It's POTTERY. It's geometric. It's a big ring.
No going wrong there.

Any tips for missing your internet friends turned friends?
Or real life friends who are still friends?
And is it ok to wear two necklaces at once with that ring while drinking my Kacia mug?
Don't tell me if not.
